Massoud Hossaini won the Pulitzer Prize for his photo taken after a bomb attack in the center of Kabul.
The Afghan photographer, Massoud Hossaini has won the country’s first Pulitzer Prize for a picture he took after a bomb attack in Kabul.
Hossaini’s photograph depicts Taraneh, an Afghan girl who stands screaming in shock among a crowd of dead and injured people.
The picture was taken on December 6, 2011, during Ashura ceremonies commemorating the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (PBUH).
The bombing killed at least 54 people including Taraneh’s brother, and her aunts and uncles.
“I still can't go back and look at the pictures I took on that Ashura day,” said the 30-year-old photographer who was injured by flying shrapnel.
The picture has also won Hossaini the Pictures of the Year International award for best news picture, and the second award of the Spot News in the World Press Photo 2012 contest.
"It's a big deal for a photographer to see his picture on the cover of newspapers like New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Washington Post," said the AFP photographer.
